Wellness Director

Director of Wellness

We are excited to announce that Darrell Thomas has been offered and has accepted the position of Director of Wellness. Darrell brings a wealth of experience and passion to this new role, and has a vision for nurturing caring relationships and healing across the district. “Human dignity is a need that we all have. If that need isn’t met it causes tension in our relationship with one another and tarnishes our ability to work together for the greater good.”

The new Director of Wellness will support our K-12 social and emotional learning curriculum, mental health services, restorative approaches to discipline, and our 6-12 student unions and advisory programs. Careful consideration of student progress, perceptions, and community needs went into defining the new role. Conversations in our strategic planning, equity, wellness and reengagement committees which identified a strong need to foster a sense of belonging for every student.

After initial applicant screening, students, staff, families and community members participated in interviews to select the ideal candidate. One adult on the hiring committee reflected, “Darrell was introspective, thoughtful, practical, and honest. He doesn't have any illusions about how much work there is to do, but he approaches the kids with an ease and very deep listening.” A student wrote, “I feel safe around him and he makes us feel like we have a voice in him.”

Darrell has a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice & Human Services as well an Associates of Science in Business Administration from the Colorado Technical University. Darrell has worked with youth for over 10 years. Some of his experience includes working with youth experiencing homelessness, youth in the Juvenile Justice System, youth in foster care, and Tribal Child Welfare. He is a restorative practitioner with the ability to facilitate circles and mediations.

Many people in the community remember him from his work with Juvenile Services and facilitating circles within the county.

We look forward to supporting Darrell as he transitions into the new role in August. Please join us in giving him a warm welcome.
