Salish Coast - Tuesday, March 3, 6-7pm in the SC Library
Join us for a presentation on the topics of Human Growth and Development and HIV/AIDS instruction. Review the curriculum and sample lessons from the district approved FLASH curriculum for grades five, eight and nine as well as topics to be covered in state mandated HIV/AIDS instruction for grades 5 - 12.

A sampling of topics include: HIV/AIDS Prevention, Healthy Relationships, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity, Sex and Sexuality, Pregnancy and Parenting, Puberty, and Anatomy.  This is an opportunity for parents to preview materials that will be used in the classroom in the spring.  Come find out what your child is learning – and be able to continue the discussion at home.

Washington State requires all schools that provide sexual health education to use speakers, curriculum and materials that are medically and scientifically accurate, age appropriate, appropriate for students regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, and disability status, and otherwise in compliance with the provisions of the law per RCW 28A.300.475. The Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) curriculum used by Port Townsend School District in grades 5-12, meets the provisions of the Healthy Youth Act, as well as requirements in the AIDS Omnibus Act. The FLASH curriculum is used by 102 school districts across the state to provide sexual health education.  Families who are interested in learning more may also review information on the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction website at:

NOTE: Per parent request, a student may be removed from Human Growth & Development and HIV/AIDS education if the student’s parent or guardian, having attended this meeting then completes the opt-out form.  If you are unable to attend the meeting, contact the school and arrange a meeting with the school principal or Special Services Director to preview the materials prior to making the decision to opt out.
