Film Class / Film Appreciation

For one semester credit (0.50 credit) in Film Appreciation, Log 90+ hours on your Activity logs watching and discussing films on your own and in class, and complete the assignments listed below.

Class participation only, without the additional outside film viewing or Film Appreciation Notebook allows for extra credit in required English courses.

Purpose:

            The Film Class is designed to promote awareness of the importance of film as a literary communication device and as a cultural product. Students will develop summarizing, critiquing and communication skills as they write reviews and discuss films.

Goals:

Students will be able to:

  • identify and understand fiction and non-fiction elements of literature & film
  • analyze how the deliberate use of artistic elements communicates for a specific purpose
  • demonstrate comprehension of varied types of films, complex narratives, and exposition
  • summarize the main idea and supporting facts and details with evidence
  • use prior knowledge of issues, characters, events, and information to examine films and extend understanding
  • evaluate reliability, credibility and valdity of information presented in films
  • synthesize ideas from selections to make predictions and inferences about various film
  • expand comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing information and ideas
  • critically compare, contrast, and connect ideas within and among a broad range of themes
  • voice original ideas; demonstrate content knowledge; persuade audience; listen critically and build upon the ideas of others; ask clarifying questions and challenge statements of others; negotiate and compromise
  • use logical sequence to accurately retell stories; order and/or sequence parts of text
  • think critically and analyze authors' use of language, style, purpose, and perspective
  • distinguish between fact, opinion, and reasoned argument; clarify point of view and context; identify assumptions and fallacies, recognize stereotypes, clichés, bias, and propaganda techniques; evaluate accuracy and timeliness of information; determine main message and identify target audience; analyze credibility and authenticity

Assignments:          

Attend class weekly. Participate in film discussions and written reviews following showings. 

Create and assemble a professional-looking Theme-based Film Appreciation Notebook that includes:
--2-3 page essay about the Theme/Director;
--A list of films seen both during and outside of class;
--Three (3)+ biographies of actors and directors in this theme;
--1-2 page summaries of five (5)+ films.
           
Demonstrate improvement in writing, summarizing, and critiquing skills as evidenced by class discussions and film reviews.
