School Start Will Be Delayed One Week

On August 28, 2018 the Superintendent of Port Townsend Public Schools Dr. John Polm announced that Salish Coast Elementary will open one week late on Tuesday, September 11.  Polm says, "Although we are disappointed with the delay, we believe it is prudent to build in time for necessary work and for our staff to prepare classrooms."  Due to the continued exterior work stoppage, not all work was completed as scheduled, primarily the outside paving and earth work.  At this time the work stoppage is continuing, and there is not a known timeline to resolution.

Blue Heron Middle School, OCEAN, and Port Townsend High School will start as scheduled.

"Although we are very close, we do not have enough assurance that all pieces will fall into place by September 4th," says Kirk Robinson, Project Manager.

Teachers, classified staff and administrators will be working this week and next to ready classrooms at Salish Coast.  Workers will be onsite at Salish Coast elementary to complete the remaining interior work, and ready the site exterior with some temporary measures to allow for access to the school and student recess.  The interior of the building is nearly complete, furniture is being installed, and finishing work is underway.  District administrators are continuing to work collaboratively with the city, contractor, and the project manager to ensure that Salish Coast Elementary is safe and ready when students start on September 11th.

The district will hold an informational night for Salish Coast Elementary families on Thursday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Port Townsend High School Auditorium 1500 Van Ness St., to answer questions about the process, and provide the most up to date information.

Salish Coast Elementary families will be regularly updated through the SchoolMessenger automated calling and email system.  Any Salish Coast Elementary family needing to update their contact information with the school should email Salish Coast Elementary secretary LaTrecia Arthur,

The planned Salish Coast Elementary community event scheduled for September 14 will be rescheduled for a later date.

Updates will also be posted on the Salish Coast website, Port Townsend Schools website, and the Salish Coast Facebook page,
