"The Secret Garden" - OPEPO and

Missoula Childrens' Theater

As 2012 began, the OPEPO Program embarked on an intensive one-week experience with the Missoula Childrens' Theater (MCT).   On January 2, when the rest of us were home watching the bowl games, the OPEPO students were trying out for a play.  Over the next four days they worked at the high school auditorium, and by Saturday, they put on two hour-long performances of "The Secret Garden" for two sold-out, standing-room-only audiences at the high school.

This play was an adaptation of the children's book of the same name, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911.

OPEPO is our multiage team-taught program for grades 1-5, taught by Karmen Meier and Lisa Olsen.  We are grateful for all the parents in OPEPO who helped plan this event and who supported it in so many ways. We are especially indebted to parent Oceanna VanLelyveld, who organized the entire week,  coordinated with MCT, and refined every detail to help make this a great learning experience for our OPEPO students.

Kindergarten

For the 2011-12 school year, Grant Street School offers full-day and half-day (AM) kindergarten. Parents may choose to enroll their students in full-day kindergarten at registration. The base tuition for the second half of the kindergarten day is $240 per month. A sliding scale is available for reduced tuition for families who qualify.

Currently, we have three full-day and one half-day (morning) kindergarten classes.  Enrollment is between 18 and 21 students.

We invite prospective parents to come and visit Grant Street School. To make an appointment for a tour, or to get information about registering for the 2011-12 school year, contact the school office at 379-4535.

Eagle Reading Program

Grant Street School's "Eagle Reading Program" is a school-wide model where entire classes come to a purposefully designed classroom for small group reading instruction. Each class attends the Eagle Room for 20-25 minutes of reading instruction in 5-6 small groups of students. The curriculum is a balance of word work (based on a program called "Phonographix") and comprehension strategies (using a model of "Guided Reading"). Student progress is closely monitored through individual "running record" asessments, and the instructional teams meet every other week to review progress and plan instruction.

During the fall of 2007 a film crew from Reel Life Productions created a 20-minute show on reading instruction at Grant Street. , This film has appeared on our local access Port Townsend Television (PTTV).
To see the film, click here. (Give it a few moments to begin to run.)

We welcome visitors to the Eagle Room. We regularly bring parents, community people, and educators from the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas to see the excellent, research-based reading instruction we provide. For a personal tour, please contact the school office.

Parent Conference Feedback

Teachers in Kindergarten through 2nd grade piloted our new standards-based progress reports in 2007-2008. We asked parents for feedback at their conferences, and 64% of our parents took the time to complete the survey.

The results of the survey were very positive:
94% of the parents said the new progress report was clear and easy to understand.
97% said that as a result of the progress report and conference they understood how their child was learning in school.

You may view the report card templates for each grade level by clicking on the links below.
